Penny Stock Scanner and Trading Bot for US Volume Spikes

Penny stocks can move a lot in minutes, which attracts traders and also makes them dangerous. A penny stock scanner helps you spot unusual activity, such as a sudden volume spike, faster than you could by scrolling charts. Combined with a bot that applies strict rules and a stop-loss, it can turn a chaotic hunt into a disciplined process. This guide explains how it works, the rules that matter and the risks you must respect.

What is a penny stock scanner?

A penny stock scanner searches a large list of low-priced US stocks for conditions you care about. The most common condition is a volume spike: a stock suddenly trading far more shares than usual. Volume spikes often come with news, earnings or strong interest, and they can lead to sharp moves in either direction.

Scanning by hand is slow. By the time you notice a mover, much of the move may be over. A scanner checks many stocks continuously during market hours and shows you the matches.

Scanner alone vs scanner plus bot

A scanner on its own only gives you a list. You still have to decide, size the position, place the order and set the stop-loss, often within seconds. That is where many traders slip: they chase late, skip the stop-loss or trade far too large. Pairing the penny stock scanner with a bot means the same filters, the same position sizing and the same stop-loss are applied to every match, and the bot never forgets to close positions before the bell. You remain in charge of the rules; the bot simply carries them out the same way each time.

How the CT Products penny stock trading bot works

CT Products includes a penny-stock scanner on the Elite plan, connected to Interactive Brokers (IBKR). Here is what it does:

  1. Scans US penny stocks during market hours for volume spikes.
  2. Applies your rules to each match.
  3. Trades matches with a stop-loss, held at the broker.
  4. Closes positions before the bell, so nothing is held overnight.

All the usual money-based risk limits apply on top. Your money stays in your own IBKR account. Real-time IBKR prices may need an IBKR market data subscription, which you arrange with IBKR directly. Read more on our Interactive Brokers trading bot page.

Example penny stock trading bot rules

Rules make the difference between disciplined trading and gambling. These are learning examples, not recommendations.

Momentum after a volume spike

"When a penny stock shows a volume spike, buy only if price is above VWAP and the 9 EMA is above the 21 EMA on the 1-minute chart. Stop-loss 1 ATR below entry. Take profit at 2 times the risk. Close any open trade before the market close."

Avoid the first wild minutes

"Ignore scanner matches in the first 5 minutes after the open. After that, require price to hold above VWAP for two consecutive 1-minute candles before entering."

Strict exposure rules

"No more than 2 penny stock trades open at once. Maximum 5 trades per day. Stop trading for the day after the daily loss limit is reached."

You write rules like these in plain words on the story board, and the AI agent turns them into rule cards. Rules can use 16 indicators, including SMA, EMA, RSI, ATR and VWAP. See best indicators for a trading bot for why VWAP is popular in intraday trading.

The risks of penny stocks you must know

Penny stocks carry extra risks compared with large, well-known companies:

  • Low liquidity. Some stocks trade thinly, so prices can jump and fills can be poor.
  • Wide spreads. The gap between buy and sell prices can be large.
  • Slippage. A stop-loss may fill well below its level during a fast drop.
  • Sudden reversals. A spike can fade as quickly as it started.
  • Manipulation risk. Low-priced stocks can be targets of promotion schemes.

A penny stock trading bot cannot remove these risks. What it can do is apply limits consistently, place a stop-loss on every trade and close everything before the bell. That is why backtesting and paper trading are essential.

Risk settings for penny stock trading

Set these per broker, in money:

Setting Why it matters for penny stocks
Risk per trade Keeps each loss small even if slippage is bad
Largest position Limits size in thin, volatile stocks
Daily loss limit Stops a bad day from getting worse
Open trades Avoids holding too many movers at once
Trades per day Prevents chasing every scanner alert
Stop-loss distance Keeps stops sensible for volatile prices

A hard cap stops any single trade from risking more than 5% of the account. A kill switch closes all trades at once. Our guide to drawdown control for small accounts is useful if you trade with a modest balance.

Testing and monitoring the scanner bot

Backtests run on IBKR's past prices with its own fees and slippage, showing trades, win rate, profit factor and drawdown. Because penny stocks are volatile, pay special attention to drawdown and to how results change when slippage is higher.

Then run the scanner on paper (practice). While it runs:

  • The trade alarm tells you when a trade opens.
  • The live trade chart shows entry, stop-loss, take-profit and the money at stake at each level.
  • Will it trade? explains why a strategy would or would not trade right now.
  • Trade history records the reason for every entry and exit, with Excel and PDF export.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan includes the penny stock scanner?

The penny-stock scanner is included in the Elite plan. It works with Interactive Brokers for US penny stocks during market hours.

Does the penny stock trading bot hold positions overnight?

No. It trades scanner matches with a stop-loss and closes them before the bell.

Can a stop-loss fully protect me in penny stocks?

Not fully. In fast or thin markets a stop-loss can fill at a worse price than planned, so keep position sizes small and use a daily loss limit.

Do I need an IBKR market data subscription for the scanner?

Real-time IBKR prices may need an IBKR market data subscription. This is arranged and paid directly with IBKR.
