Interactive Brokers Trading Bot, API Automated Trading Without Code

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) gives traders access to US stock markets and a well-known API for automation. The catch is that writing your own program against that API takes real coding skill. An Interactive Brokers trading bot from CT Products lets you skip the code: you describe your rules in plain words, test them on past prices, and run them on practice money before going live. This guide explains how it works, with example rules and risk settings.

Interactive Brokers API automated trading, the traditional way

IBKR offers an API that lets software place orders, read positions and receive prices. Traditional Interactive Brokers API automated trading usually means:

  1. Learning a programming language such as Python, Java or C#.
  2. Running IBKR's Trader Workstation or gateway software that the code connects to.
  3. Writing logic for data, signals, order handling, errors and reconnections.
  4. Building your own backtesting and logging.
  5. Keeping a computer or server running during market hours.

This is powerful, but it is a lot of work and easy to get wrong, especially around error handling and risk controls. A small bug, such as an order sent twice after a reconnection or a stop-loss that is never placed, can cost real money. For many traders, the time spent maintaining code is time not spent improving the strategy itself. That is the gap a no-code Interactive Brokers trading bot is designed to fill: you keep the strategy decisions, and the platform takes care of the plumbing, logging and risk checks.

How the CT Products Interactive Brokers trading bot works

CT Products handles the technical side, so you can focus on the strategy:

  1. Connect your IBKR account in the app. Your money stays in your own IBKR account.
  2. Choose paper or live mode. Start with paper (practice).
  3. Write your strategy on the story board in plain words: which stocks, timeframe, entry, exit, stop-loss and target. Attach chart screenshots or PDFs if helpful.
  4. Review the rule cards the AI agent produces from your description.
  5. Backtest on IBKR's past prices with its own fees and slippage.
  6. Set money-based risk limits and run on paper.

Rules can use 16 indicators, including SMA, EMA, RSI, ATR, VWAP, Bollinger Bands and daily standard-deviation levels, and are checked in code at every candle close. There is no AI call per candle, which keeps AI costs low; the app shows those costs live.

One practical note: real-time IBKR prices may need an IBKR market data subscription, which you arrange and pay with IBKR directly. See our Interactive Brokers trading bot page for connection details.

Example US stock rules in plain words

These are learning examples, not recommendations.

Opening range breakout

"On the 5-minute chart for a liquid large-cap stock, record the high and low of the first 15 minutes after the open. Buy if price closes above the high while above VWAP. Stop-loss at the range low or 1.5 ATR, whichever is closer. Take profit at 2 times the risk. Close all trades before the market close."

Daily trend pullback

"On the daily chart, buy when the stock is above its 200 SMA, the 20 EMA is above the 50 EMA, and RSI dips below 40 then closes back above it. Stop-loss 2 ATR below entry. Exit if price closes below the 50 EMA."

VWAP mean reversion

"On the 15-minute chart, buy when price falls to the lower daily standard-deviation level below VWAP and RSI is below 30, then closes back up. Target VWAP. Stop-loss 1 ATR below the low."

Testing your IBKR strategy

Backtests use IBKR's own past prices, fees and slippage. Look at:

Metric What to check
Trades Enough trades to judge the idea
Win rate Read it with average win and loss
Profit factor Whether gross profit beat gross loss
Drawdown The deepest fall you would have lived through

"Improve with backtest" (Pro and above) proposes up to 3 better versions of your rules. Each is tested on a learning period and on unseen prices, and you can apply the best one with one click while your old rules are kept. Read how to backtest a trading strategy for more.

Risk settings for an Interactive Brokers trading bot

Set limits per broker, in money, before the first trade:

  • Risk per trade: money lost if the stop-loss is hit.
  • Largest position: the maximum size in any one stock.
  • Daily loss limit: stops new trades for the day.
  • Open trades: limits how many stocks you hold at once.
  • Trades per day: prevents over-trading.
  • Stop-loss distance: keeps stops realistic.

A hard cap prevents any single trade from risking more than 5% of the account. Every trade has a stop-loss held at the broker, and a kill switch closes everything at once. Remember that stocks can gap at the open, so a stop-loss may fill at a worse price than planned.

Running and monitoring the bot

When the strategy is live or on paper:

  • Will it trade? explains why a strategy would or would not trade right now.
  • Trade alarm notifies you when a trade opens.
  • Live trade chart shows entry, stop-loss, take-profit and the money at stake if each is hit.
  • Trade history gives the reason for every entry and exit, with Excel and PDF export.
  • Self-healing (Pro and above) pauses and retrains a strategy after a losing streak or drawdown.

You can also run IBKR alongside Binance, Exness or Pepperstone, depending on your plan. Elite subscribers get the US penny-stock scanner too. See the features page.
