A trading bot is only as good as the instructions you give it. Learning how to write trading strategy rules is the single most useful skill for anyone who wants to automate, because vague ideas produce random results while clear rules can be tested, measured and improved. This guide gives you a simple template, real examples in plain words and the mistakes to avoid.
Why clear rules matter more than the bot
Two traders can use the same software and get completely different results. The difference is almost always in the rules. "Buy the dip" means something different to every person. "Buy when price closes below the lower Bollinger Band on the 1-hour chart and RSI is under 30" means exactly one thing.
Clear rules give you three benefits:
- They can be backtested. Software can only test what it can measure.
- They can be explained. When a trade loses, you can see which rule fired and why.
- They can be improved. You change one condition at a time and compare results.
The six parts of every trading strategy
Whenever you write a strategy, make sure it answers these six questions.
1. Market and timeframe
Which symbol, and which candle size? For example "BTC/USDT, 4-hour candles" or "XAUUSD, 15-minute candles". Rules are checked at every candle close, so the timeframe controls how often the bot looks.
2. Entry conditions
The exact conditions that must all be true to open a trade. Use numbers and words like "closes above", "crosses below" or "is between".
3. Direction
Long only, short only or both. Beginners often do better starting with one direction.
4. Stop-loss
Where you admit the trade is wrong. Good options: a fixed distance, a multiple of ATR, or just beyond a recent swing high or low.
5. Take-profit and exits
A fixed target (such as 2 times the risk), an indicator-based exit (such as "close when price closes below the 20 EMA"), or both.
6. Filters and limits
Times to avoid, maximum trades per day, and conditions that switch the strategy off, such as "no trades when ATR is unusually high".
Examples: how to write trading strategy rules in plain words
Here are three sample strategies written the way you could type them on the CT Products "story board". They are examples of structure, not recommendations.
Trend pullback (crypto): "Trade BTC/USDT on the 1-hour chart, long only. Enter when the 50 EMA is above the 200 EMA, price pulls back to touch the 50 EMA, and the candle closes back above it with RSI above 45. Stop-loss 1.5 times ATR below entry. Take profit at 2 times the risk. Maximum 2 trades per day."
Mean reversion (forex): "Trade EUR/USD on the 15-minute chart, both directions. Buy when price closes below the lower Bollinger Band (20, 2) and RSI is below 30. Sell when price closes above the upper band and RSI is above 70. Exit at the middle band. Stop-loss 1 times ATR beyond entry. No trades in the hour around major news."
Intraday VWAP (US stocks): "Trade SPY on the 5-minute chart during market hours, long only. Enter when price closes back above VWAP after trading below it, and the 9 EMA is rising. Stop-loss below the low of the signal candle. Take profit at the first daily standard-deviation level above VWAP. Close all trades 10 minutes before the close."
Notice what each one includes: market, timeframe, direction, entry, stop, target and a limit. Nothing is left to feeling.
Turning your words into rule cards
When you write your strategy on the story board, the AI agent turns it into a refined strategy and exact rules shown as rule cards. You can also attach chart screenshots or PDFs that show your setup.
Then the rules run on up to 16 indicators, including SMA, EMA, RSI, ATR, VWAP, Bollinger Bands and daily standard-deviation levels, checked in code at every candle close. There is no AI call per candle, so AI costs stay low and are shown live in the app.
Always read the rule cards carefully. Check that the timeframe, direction and stop-loss match what you meant. If a card is wrong, change your words and regenerate. The "Will it trade?" check then explains in plain words why the strategy would or would not trade right now, which is a quick way to catch rules that can never be true at the same time.
Trading bot for beginners: common rule-writing mistakes
If you are looking for a trading bot for beginners, the bot itself is the easy part. These mistakes are what usually go wrong:
| Mistake | Example | Better version |
|---|---|---|
| Vague wording | "Buy when momentum is strong" | "Buy when RSI crosses above 55" |
| No stop-loss | "Exit when it turns around" | "Stop-loss 1.5 times ATR below entry" |
| Too many filters | Eight conditions that rarely align | Two or three core conditions |
| Conflicting rules | "RSI above 70" and "RSI below 30" together | Separate long and short rules |
| No timeframe | "Buy above the 50 EMA" | "Buy when the 1-hour candle closes above the 50 EMA" |
| Ignoring costs | 0.1% target on a 5-minute chart | Targets large enough to cover fees and slippage |
Another beginner trap is changing rules after every losing trade. Losses are normal. Judge a strategy on a meaningful number of trades, not the last three.
Test before you trust
Once the rules are written, test them in this order:
- Backtest on your broker's past prices with its own fees and slippage. Look at trades, win rate, profit factor and drawdown. Our guide on how to backtest a trading strategy explains each number.
- Improve with backtest (Pro and above): the AI proposes up to 3 better versions, tested on a learning period and on unseen prices. Apply the best with one click; your old rules are kept.
- Paper trade for a few weeks on practice money.
- Set risk limits in money before going live: risk per trade, largest position, daily loss, open trades and trades per day. A hard cap stops any single trade risking more than 5% of the account.

Frequently asked questions
How detailed should my trading rules be?
Detailed enough that two people would place exactly the same trades from them. Every rule should include a market, timeframe, entry, stop-loss and exit.
Can I attach a chart to explain my strategy?
Yes. On the story board you can attach chart screenshots or PDFs alongside your written description.
What is the best stop-loss rule for beginners?
A stop based on ATR, such as 1 to 2 times ATR from entry, adapts to market volatility and is a sensible starting point. Always test it before using real money.
Is a trading bot good for beginners?
It can help beginners stay disciplined, but it does not replace learning. Start with simple rules, paper trade first and keep risk per trade small.
Trading involves risk, including the loss of your capital. Nothing in this article is financial advice.
